Democratic Transition
How to manage the transition period after a change in regime: immediate stabilisation and security measures, institutionalisation of the transition and long-term democratic consolidation.
The fall of an authoritarian regime is not an end in itself: it opens an extremely fragile transition period, often more dangerous than the resistance phase itself. This training prepares democratic leaders to anticipate and manage the institutional, security and political challenges of the first weeks and years following a change of power.
What you will learn
- Identify immediate priorities (security, institutional continuity, release of political prisoners)
- Design a transition roadmap involving all stakeholders
- Structure provisional institutions and frame constitutional processes
- Build the foundations of a consolidated democracy: rule of law, transitional justice, national reconciliation
Who is this for?
Leaders of pro-democracy movements, party officials, jurists and diplomats engaged in transitioning countries or preparing for an exit from authoritarian rule.
