Awakening Minds to the Democratic Fight

The Fondemos
Review

Our editorial platform that highlights democratic initiatives around the world and analyses civic movements.

Portraits of activists, civic movements and organisations that embody the fight for political freedom around the world.

Fondemos's analyses, positions and interventions on global democratic news: elections, crackdowns, mobilisations.

Case studies are the visible part of Fondemos's think-tank dimension. They continuously feed reflection and analysis of current situations (particularly those of the movements we support), drawing on past episodes, often contemporary, sometimes more distant. They renew our answers to certain questions and enrich our collection of successful experiences.

These analyses have an essentially operational purpose. While they require some understanding of the geopolitical context, their aim is always to understand what worked, what did not, and why, in order to identify which parameters make certain democratic successes applicable, or not, to other situations.

Fondemos editorials: positions on the structural issues of democracy, readings of international reports and in-depth reflections on political freedom.

THE GEZI PROTESTS : PROTEST DYNAMICS AND THE WEAKENING OF THE ERDOĞAN REGIME

In 2013, a plan to demolish Gezi park in central Istanbul triggered nationwide protests across 79 provinces. Police repression reframed the conflict: the focus shifted to how the government treats dissent. Gezi imposed real political costs: a legitimacy crisis over civil liberties, loss of narrative control, and international exposure. Yet the movement's decentralised structure deprived it of the organisation needed to convert momentum into transition: what lessons can be learnt for other pro-democracy movements?

Cuban Opposition : Why Does Discontent Not Lead to Regime Change ?

Despite decades of internal resistance, Cuba’s regime endures. Repression, silencing and mass emigration form an iron triangle that drains dissent without breaking the system. From the 11 July 2021 protests to today's blackouts, Fondemos maps how preventive coercion, informational control and exile as a safety valve keep mobilisation sporadic and politically ineffective.

The issue goes beyond the question of access alone; it also concerns the way power is exercised. Political practices are the product of social histories and cultures.
